There are two directorates that offer opportunities to experience all aspects of theatre work and gain invaluable experience in one of the best Trusts in the country.
Peri-operative directorate
We have 51 theatres over both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital sites covering all surgical specialties including transplantation.
We have two innovative Da-Vinci Robots which are being used for various surgical procedures across all specialities.
We operate on approximately 60,000 patients per year. The theatre team includes anaesthetic, speciality scrub and floor nurses and recovery.

Cardiothoracic directorate
We provide a full range of cardiac and thoracic surgery in 4 theatres, 7 catheter laboratories inclusive of a screening room which also includes robotic surgery, for both adults and children including heart and lung transplantation.
Our catheter laboratory department provides interventions such as T.A.V.I.s (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation), primary interventions, EP & C.T.O (Coronary Total Occlusion) procedures.

Shift Patterns
We provide 24/7 service 365 days of the year. Lists operate Monday to Saturday with out-of-hours on-call for evening and week end emergencies including transplantation.
Due to the demands of the services there are various shift patterns across all specialties. Some specialties are required to participate in an on-call rota.
Staff Groups
We have the following staff working within the departments, Matron, Sister / Charge Nurse, Clinical Educator, Surgical Care Practitioners, Advanced Scrub Practitioners, Staff Nurses & Operating Department Practitioners, Assistant Practitioners, Critical Care Assistants, Healthcare Assistants, Admin & Clerical Support, Receptionists, Theatre Orderlies, Storeman and Housekeeper. Cardio also have Perfusionists, Cardiac Physiologists and Radiographers
Staff Training
A preceptorship package is provided by the Trust to all newly qualified staff in addition to this a supernumerary period is given depending on level of skills & experience of the applicant. Specific competency packages are provided for each speciality along with education support and a Theatre specific Induction day, E.P sedation course and Clinical Skills training from the Clinical Education Team.
