Vascular surgery is a specialty dealing with diseases affecting the vascular system including diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels.
The Northern Vascular Centre is based at the Freeman Hospital and provides the main vascular surgical service for all patients from Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland and Gateshead.
We also treat more complex vascular problems, seeing patients from across the North of England, Scotland and even other parts of the UK for very specialist cases.
At the Northern Vascular Centre we offer a full range of vascular surgery treatments including endovascular (keyhole), open surgery and medical treatments.
Advanced diagnostic facilities and clinical expertise
We have a dedicated vascular ward (Ward 8) at the Freeman Hospital where our patients are cared for by specialist nurses, podiatry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and surgeons to provide the highest levels of vascular care.
Patients are treated in our state-of-the–art hybrid operating theatre which allows the use of x-ray guided procedures during surgery. This sits alongside our existing two interventional radiology suites and vascular operating theatre.
Specialist services for a full range of complex conditions
As well as looking after common vascular problems such as varicose veins, peripheral arterial disease and aneurysms, we also diagnose and treat complex vascular conditions.
We are one of the leading specialist centres in the UK for complex aortic aneurysm repair, having begun our aneurysm stent graft programme in the mid-1990s.
We also carry out carotid stenting, an alternative operation for people at risk of stroke.
Our dedicated diabetic foot service and urgent access clinics allow rapid response to urgent problems and offer the latest treatments in this area.
