The Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Service at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care provides a free, confidential service to anyone affected by cancer. We can offer time to listen, time to talk and time to make sense of it all.
We aim to help with any aspect of your life including treatment, family and problems with work, money worries, including help with benefits or planning ahead.
You don’t need to be referred or have an appointment to see us, just drop-in to ask a question, browse our information or speak to our friendly team.
Information and support
The Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Service has a library of fee cancer information for you to explore. You may wish to get advice from the Macmillan experts who are on hand to support you to find the right information.
There are free booklets and flyers covering many topics including:
- cancer types and treatments
- emotional wellbeing
- staying physically active
- carers, relatives and friends
- finance, work and travel
- life after cancer treatment
- local service and support groups
If we don’t have what you need, we’ll be happy to signpost you to other sources of information and support, or help you with an internet search.
Support
We understand that being affected by cancer can cause a range of feelings and emotions. Whether you’re a patient or a relative, friend or carer of someone who is unwell, we’re here to support you or talk things through.
Our team is made up of two specially trained staff who provide individual support, information and practical advice that’s right for you.
We want you and those around you to feel listened to, understood and informed. You can talk to us in confidence about anything you may be worried about or need information on. This may be coping with your own feelings and financial help to what to say to others. If you need a private space, this is available.
We work closely with the welfare rights team, complementary therapists, counselling and psychological care team, and can refer you to the appropriate as and when needed.
How to access us
The centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm. You do not need an appointment. Please call us first so we can make sure our service is available for you in a safe way during these difficult times.
The centre is open to everyone, whether you are a patient from Newcastle upon Tyne or not. Your oncologist, specialist nurse or GP can also refer you for cancer support.
Where to find us
We are located on level 2 just opposite the Northern Centre for Cancer Care outpatient reception desk.
