The Northern Genetics Service has both a cytogenetics and a molecular (DNA) laboratory in Newcastle. These provide a service to the whole of the Region.
Referral and sample details for cytogenetic or molecular genetic testing are given on the relevant pages in the sections:
- Cytogenetics
- Molecular Genetics
Please refer the family or at least discuss with us before requesting DNA tests.
The only tests which will be performed without the patient being seen, or prior consultation are:
- Cystic Fibrosis (CF) carrier testing
- Hereditary haemochromatosis (HHC) carrier testing
- Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) carrier testing
If it is not possible to get a blood sample, saliva may sometimes be used for DNA analysis.
Please contact the Genetics Department to discuss alternative collection methods:

All samples must be accompanied by the relevant form and labelled with:
- the name
- date of birth
Please ensure that samples are securely contained in a sealed plastic bag.
Samples should be couriered to your local hospital who will forward them to the Northern Genetics Service.
