We are only able to provide a limited number of NHS funded implant treatments. In many circumstances alternative treatment options must have been tried before you are for assessment.
Guidelines for selecting appropriate patients to receive treatment with dental implants: priorities for the NHS (Royal College of Surgeons of England 2012) lists the following categories as potentially warranting intervention with implants. These are not listed in order of priority. The latter guidelines will be used to help decide which patients can be offered implants.
• Patients with developmental conditions resulting in deformed and/or missing teeth
• Patients who have lost teeth due to trauma
• Patients who have undergone ablative surgery for head and neck cancer
• Patients with extra-oral defects
• Patients who are edentulous in one or both jaws
• Patients with severe denture intolerance
• Patients with aggressive periodontitis
• Patients requiring implant-borne orthodontic anchorage
Matching these categories does not guarantee that implants can be offered at the Dental Hospital.
We would normally expect that dentate patients to be caries free, have no active periodontal disease and be able to demonstrate a good standard of oral hygiene.
The Dental Hospital is not normally able to offer treatment for the following:
• Completion of implant treatment commenced elsewhere
• Making good prosthodontic problems in relation to implant treatment carried out elsewhere
• Maintenance if implants and implant restorations provided elsewhere
Following completion of implant based treatment it is our usual practice to discharge patients from the Dental Hospital.
