Newcastle Hospitals has an outstanding reputation for its interventional radiological expertise which provides life-saving diagnostic and therapeutic treatment for patients from all over the North East and North Cumbria every single day.
Our specialists carry out complex and minimally invasive x-ray guided procedures and are at the forefront of the very latest techniques in a fast-paced, ever evolving specialism using image guidance covering many specialties including vascular, oncology, hepatobiliary and gastroenterology.
Newcastle’s main hospital sites at the RVI and Freeman Hospital both benefit from pioneering interventional radiology departments and we are seeking enthusiastic nurses or operating department practitioners with an innovative and scientific aesthetic who enjoy being challenged in a fast paced environment to join our dynamic, multidisciplinary team.
Many of our procedures, whilst minimally invasive, can be daunting for patients. We approach all our daily work with the ethos that patients remain at the heart of everything we do, in line with the trust’s Vision and Values.
We welcome applications from compassionate individuals who pride themselves in having a natural aptitude which would help make patients feel at ease within minutes of arrival in the department, whilst building trust for our radiologists to complete their procedure as stress-free as possible.
You will need to be able to make quick decisions when needed, have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to be able to provide our clinicians with the crucial support they require.
In return, our talented teams offer a wide range of opportunities to develop your core skills to support patients through procedures. This will include developing a good understanding and knowledge of large volumes of specialist equipment, their use and technical information.
Family friendly hours of Monday to Friday with on call at weekends after training – this means most Bank Holidays do not require cover.
Your role will include:
- Ensuring patient safety, acting as a circulating nurse/ODP, monitoring and supporting the patient, administering sedation and procedural analgesia as required
- Working as a scrub nurse/ODP in a multi-disciplinary team assisting radiographers and consultant radiologists with procedures
- Mentoring student nurses
The ideal candidate will be a first level registered nurse, or qualified ODP. Experience in interventional radiology or theatres would be an advantage but is not essential.
Willingness to undertake training and act as a student mentor is essential.
The successful applicant would after training take part in an on call rota and therefore a driving licence and access to a car is essential.
