The podiatry biomechanics service assesses and treats structural, functional and neurological foot and ankle problems.
These problems may cause pain or interference with the way the lower limbs function, and with peoples normal walking pattern.
Our services
Our specialist biomechanics team provides:
- Assessment of lower limbs in hospital and at community sites throughout the city
- Prescriptions for orthoses and footwear
- Cortico-steroid injections
We have weekly orthotic/footwear clinics at the Geoffrey Rhodes Centre in Byker, and Newcastle Diabetes Centre.
This is for people with severe structural foot and ankle deformity, and patients with foot ulceration.
Geoffrey Rhodes Centre
Our main base is at the Geoffrey Rhodes Centre.
Monday to Friday – 8.30am – 5pm
In addition, we also carry out reviews at community venues throughout the city.
Conditions we treat
Some of the conditions we treat include:
- Heel pain/plantar fasciitis
- Joint, tendon and nerve problems
- Bunion deformities
- Clawed and hammer toes
- Foot deformity and flat feet
- Skin damage needing pressure relief
- Diabetic foot complications
- Neurological conditions affecting walking
- Sports injuries
- Abnormalities with children’s walking.
After assessment, you will be given a ‘risk category’ and care plan.
How can I be referred into the service?
Patients can be referred to the biomechanics service by their GP.
However, you can also be referred into the service by:
- Practice nurses
- Podiatrists
- Community physiotherapists
- Hospital doctors.
We have a telephone triage service if you are a new patient. This allows us to find the most appropriate location and staff member for your treatment. We can also refer you to another specialist service if needed.
Where possible, we will carry out telephone reviews with patient to speed up access to the service. This also reduces the time a patient needs to take out of their day.
