Newcastle’s RVI is home to the Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre which means our trauma experts from both wards receive patients with serious, often life-threatening injuries from all over the North East and North Cumbria.
Our Trauma inpatient wards comprise of:
Ward 22 – Orthopaedic Trauma Ward
Ward 22 has a total of 33 inpatient beds comprising of a 13 bedded Neck of Femur unit which is part of best practice and 20 acute Orthopaedic beds.
Ward 23 – Major Trauma Ward
Ward 23 is a multi-specialty ward with 21 acute major trauma beds and a specially designated 10 bedded major trauma rehabilitation unit.
Our patients are admitted either directly via the Emergency Department or following a period of intensive treatment in critical care.
Our values
We approach our work with the ethos that patients remain at the heart of everything we do, in line with the trust’s Vision and Values and we are looking for self-motivated, confident nurses with a natural aptitude for empathy and attentiveness, who can demonstrate a sensitive yet self-assured approach with patients who are often very scared and uncertain about their recovery and future.
Nurses who thrive on both our wards have a natural aptitude for connecting with patients, to gain their trust quickly and be sensitive to their needs whilst managing often complex wound dressings, plaster casts and surgical drains. Attention to detail is also vital when observing changes in a patient’s vitals, and especially when administering specialist pain relief.
Learning and Development
Our patients are from multiple specialties. As such, this role would suit nurses who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in a wide-range of clinical specialties on both inpatient wards, many of which would be transferrable to the critical care or emergency care environments should you wish to pursue a career in those areas in the future.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is extremely important to us, to ensure our staff can liberate their potential. There are several relevant courses which we encourage and support staff to complete to develop skills and competencies.
Working for us means you will:
- receive a priority place on the bespoke 2-day Major Trauma Course and be educated to Level 1 in Trauma then guided through a competency pack
- Have a named preceptor who will work through the Trust preceptorship pack and you will have access to the Trust’s core preceptorship study days.
- receive a welcome pack giving specific information on the ward and learning opportunities available
- care for patients for their entire hospital journey; from the acute stage of complex injury, through rehabilitation, to discharge
- Learn about numerous specialties and care for complex patients who may have had multiple operations, been transferred from critical care or have challenging background conditions.
- learning complex wound care,
There are also many development opportunities for promotion whether that be in ward management, specialist nursing or nurse practitioner roles, and many avenues for progression due to the number of specialties we look after.
This role would suit an experienced nurse, but motivated newly-qualified nurses can also be supported to excel in this ward.
