The Emergency Department (Major Trauma Centre), Assessment Suite and Same Day Emergency Care unit are based at the RVI. Our inpatient wards are based across both the RVI and Freeman Hospital.
There are 14 inpatient wards in the directorate and specialities include care of the elderly, rehabilitation, gastroenterology, stroke, respiratory medicine (including Cystic Fibrosis unit), infectious diseases and a short-stay medical ward.
There are a number of outpatient/day hospitals, including the programmed investigation unit, allergy and immunology unit, respiratory clinic and our care of the elderly day unit.
Royal Victoria Infirmary
Ward 19
This is an 18-bedded infectious disease and tropical medicine ward and dedicated outpatient department specialising in the care of patients with a wide range of infections and tropical diseases.
Ward 30
This is a 30-bedded gastroenterology ward specialising in the care of patients with disease or disorders of the gut, such as IBD, pancreatitis or nutritional problems.
Ward 31
This is a 29-bedded acute older people’s medical ward providing specialist care for older patients with a variety of medical conditions
Ward 41
This is a 26-bedded hyper acute stroke unit receiving direct emergency admissions and specialising in the care of patients in the initial stage of having a stroke including the care of those requiring thrombolysis.
Ward 48
This is a 29-bedded respiratory ward currently providing specialist respiratory care for patients with Covid.
Ward 49
A high level respiratory support unit.
Ward 52
This is a 36-bedded acute respiratory medicine ward providing care for patients with a variety of respiratory conditions including intestinal lung disease and COPD, The ward also includes a 6 bedded Cystic Fibrosis unit.
Emergency Department (Major Trauma Centre)
Assessment Suite
This is a 50 acute assessment ward, seeing patients direct from GP referrals and ED, prior to being transferred to an inpatient ward or discharged home with an appropriate plan of care.
Same Day Emergency Care Unit
This 7-day service operates from 8am-10pm seeing large numbers of medical and surgical patients that do not require overnight admission to hospital. Referrals come direct from GP referrals and ED.
Programmed Investigation Unit and Clinical Immunology
The team receives patients from a variety of specialities including endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology and haematology for investigations and treatments.
Our clinical immunology specialist clinic provides care for patients with immunology conditions and those with complex allergies.
Freeman Hospital
Ward 9
This is a 28-bedded ward providing rehabilitation for patients who have suffered a stroke, typically these patients are transferred directly from Ward 41 at the RVI.
Ward 13
This is a 30-bedded acute older people’s medicine ward providing specialist care for older patients with a variety of medical conditions.
Ward 14
This is a 30-bedded orthopaedic older people’s rehabilitation ward for those who need rehabilitation following bone injury. These patients tend to come from orthopaedic wards at the RVI
Ward 15
This is a 30-bedded acute older people’s medicine ward providing specialist care for older patients with a variety of medical conditions.
Ward 16
This is a 30-bedded gastroenterology ward specialising in patients who have nutritional absorption problems along with patients who have issues with their liver.
Ward 17
This is a 28-bedded acute older people’s medicine ward providing specialist care for older patients with a variety of medical conditions.
Ward 18
This is a 28-bedded acute older people’s medicine ward providing specialist care for older patients with a variety of medical conditions.
Shift Patterns
We operate a varying shift pattern that covers a 24-hour period, 7 days a week. All of the areas mainly work 12-hour shifts but shifts patterns can be negotiated with the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.
Staff Groups
We have the following staff working within the departments, Matron, Sister / Charge Nurse, Clinical Educator, Outreach, Specialist Nurses, Staff Nurses, Nurse Associates, Assistance Practitioners, Healthcare Assistants, Ward Clerks and Housekeepers.
Staff Training
Your development and education is important to us. We have four clinical educators that work closely with the Senior Sisters within departments to ensure the training delivered meets the needs of the service.
We provide a preceptorship package that gives staff a number of weeks of supernumerary practice, each area has a negotiated period. Supernumerary period is also negotiated on previous experience. A comprehensive local induction and competencies pack are available in all areas.
