One-stop breast clinic
If you have been referred by your GP with a problem, you will initially be seen in one our one-stop breast clinics. You may be seen by one of our breast surgeons, a training doctor or a nurse practitioner.
They will assess you and may organise for you to have some tests such as a mammogram (x-ray of the breast) and/or an ultrasound. Sometimes a biopsy is taken by a radiologist to gain more information.
The majority of people coming to this clinic are able to be reassured that the cause of their breast symptoms is harmless.
Results clinics
Some people are seen by one our team in a results clinic. This could be over the telephone or in person.
At these clinics we give the results of biopsies taken either through the one-stop clinic, or those referred by the Breast Screening Service. Many of the biopsies taken reveal benign breast problems and require no further treatment.
Some ladies will be diagnosed with cancer. If this is the case, we will help explain and guide you through your diagnosis and treatment options, and be there to help support you at all times.
Review clinics
You may be asked to attend for a review appointment. This could be because you are in the follow up phase following cancer treatment, or have a problem that requires input from one of our team.
Specialist clinics
At these clinics, you may see both a breast and plastic surgeon alongside one of our experienced breast reconstruction nurse specialists. This specialised clinic helps plan more complicated forms of breast conserving surgery or reconstruction.
You may also be seen in this clinic as a routine part of follow up after a reconstruction, or meet a member of our genetics team who are involved with some patients with an increased risk of breast cancer.
