We see patients with a primary brain tumour diagnosis (benign or malignant) and patient’s who have had surgical intervention for brain metastases (or secondary brain tumours). Occasionally we will support with patients with spinal tumours.
On the neurosurgical wards it is our role to provide specialist complex physical functional assessments and comprehensive cognitive assessment/risk assessments of each patient who requires input. We will outreach to other wards if needed.
We are key in discharge planning/deciding the correct discharge pathway for the patient and making any onward referrals as required.
At times we work into NCCC outpatients to support patients undergoing chemo/radiotherapy/both, to ensure we are there for the patient at each stage of their treatment.
We also offer an outpatient video clinic once a week, for existing and new patients.
There is an open-door policy for all neuro oncology patients in our regional area, so they may access neuro oncology OT service at any point following diagnosis.
We receive referrals electronically; refer to oncology/neuro oncology OT on erecord, at ward hand overs, over the phone, or via email.
