Our orthopaedics and trauma service treat injuries and conditions of the musculoskeletal system.
This includes:

- Joints
- Ligaments
- Tendons
- Muscles
- Nerves.
Our Major Trauma Centre and the directorate provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary, trauma service.
If you suffer a serious injury involving a fracture or broken bones, you’ll be treated in our specialist trauma wards.
The trauma team treats people when they are admitted to the emergency department, where there is a full range of radiological equipment on hand to assess your injuries quickly and effectively.
There are 24-hour emergency operating theatres are available if necessary, plus an intensive therapy unit (ITU).
You might be transferred to our wards from other hospitals so you can receive specialist treatment.
After surgery, we provide specialist wards for you to recover, run by teams of staff.
We have a dedicated unit to care for older people (over 70 years) who have had a fall or other injury. This is also for people who have fractured their hip.
This unit works with the Elderly care team to provide specialist care. The team will make sure that any related health conditions that may have caused your fall are identified. They will also arrange further rehabilitation if required.
The fracture risk assessment service uses state-of-the-art equipment to assess future risk of fractures. They will refer you for further risk-reducing treatments if necessary.
