We offer 2D and 3D design facilities, coupled with manufacturing capability, in support of a number of Newcastle Hospitals’ services and other internal and external stakeholders.
Our services
Our activities include the modification or the initial manufacture of items to customer specification, research support and product development, with the ability to realise conceptual ideas into virtual or physical models, prototypes and products as single items or small batches, where commercially available products are financially non-viable, lacking in functionality or not available.
Resources
Our fully equipped manufacturing workshops, based at both the Freeman Hospital and at University Hospital of North Durham, are staffed with qualified engineers with a wealth of private industry and healthcare engineering experience, working with the latest technologies and materials.
Facilities include computer numerical control (CNC) lathes and machining centres with 3D matching capability while manual cutting, turning, milling and drilling machines support this capacity together with welding and fabrication facilities, including bending and sheet metal work. Calibrated measuring equipment ensures quality assurance and is traceable to national standards.
The service utilises industry standard design and manufacturing software including SolidWorks and EdgeCam to offer full design, virtual modelling and rapid prototyping capability. From this concept development, complete engineering drawings can be produced allowing for in house manufacture or alternatively these can be forwarded to industry partners for outside manufacture.
