A TENS Machine or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Machine used during the early stages of labour.
TENS machines can provide a great form of analgesia during labour. If this is something you would like to use during labour, we ask that you bring your own equipment from home as unfortunately we do not have supply of these in the hospital. A TENS machine can be found in a wide range of retailers.
What is a TENS Machine?
A TENS machine is a small handheld battery powered machine commonly used during the early stages of labour to help relieve lower back pain.
How does it work?
A TENS machine is connected to electrodes via wire. The electrodes are small sticky pads that you attach directly onto your back. Once the pads are in place and the machine is switched on, small and safe electrical impulses will be delivered to your back. This is done by using a dial that allows you to control the strength of the impulses. You may feel this as a tingling sensation passing through your skin.
TENS is believed to work in two ways. It is thought to cause your body to release its own natural painkillers (endorphins) whilst also reducing the number of pain signals that your brain is receiving. This may help to relieve pain and relax your muscles.
Will it work for me?
All pain relief options vary in how effective they are – what works for someone else may not work for you. Most service users who use TENS report that they work well during the early stages of labour by relieving lower back pain. They also allow you to move around during your labour.
When is it the most effective?
TENS is usually most effective during the link: latent phase of labour. This is the early stage of labour where many people experience back pain. This means that you may find TENS useful whilst you are at home during the early stages of labour. However, they can be used right up to the birth of your baby.
Are there any risks to my baby?
There are no known side effects for your baby.
What other things should I consider?
TENS is not available through the NHS or on loan from the hospital. However, they can be purchased or hired through online sources or high street retailers for a range of prices. TENS cannot be used whilst in a bath or a pool so you will need to remove it before getting into the water.
Are there any side effects for me?
For most service users, TENS is a safe form of pain relief with no side effects.
Some people may be sensitive to the pads and this can cause their skin to become red and irritated. Special pads for people with sensitivities are available.
TENS may not be recommended for someone who has any of the following: epilepsy, a heart problem, a pacemaker, or any other electrical or metal implant in the body. We suggest you ask for medical advice first before using TENS if you have any of the above complications.
How often can I use it?
You may use TENS as often as, and for as long as, you wish. We do not recommend you use a TENS machine after an epidural has been put in place (if you’d like one).
Will I still be able to have a water birth?
TENS is an electrical machine so you will need to remove it before getting into the water. The use of a TENS machine before entering a birthing pool will not prevent you from having a water birth.
