The Fetal Medicine Unit is an outpatient clinic, staffed by highly qualified specialist doctors and midwives.
We offer individualised care for pregnant women and their families from all over the North East of England and Cumbria where there is a concern for the health of the unborn baby.
You may be referred to the Fetal Medicine Unit by your local hospital if:
- Something unexpected was seen on one of your routine ultrasound scans
- There is greater than usual chance of your baby having a condition. This could be because you have had a high chance screening result or following the previous birth of a baby with certain conditions
- Your baby is thought to be much smaller than usual
- If baby needs specialist treatment during the pregnancy, such as a blood transfusion in the womb
- Your baby is likely to need specialist treatment very soon after birth
The waiting room is small and during the COVID-19 pandemic we ask that you observe all social distancing measures and wear a mask at all times. The seats are arranged to maintain social distancing.
There is a baby change facility in the small waiting room a little further along outside the WRVS shop and opposite the antenatal clinic reception.
Visiting and being accompanied for appointments
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made a number of changes to the way people access our services. You can find out more here.
These guidelines are reviewed regularly to make sure we can continue to provide you with the safest and most effective care.
We are aware that you may be anxious about your appointment. You are currently welcome to bring one member of your household with you to your Fetal Medicine scans and appointments. We ask that you both wear a face mask at all times.
If you, or a member of your household, have any symptoms of COVID-19, please call the Fetal Medicine Unit before you attend on 0191 282 5837.
Students
As a teaching hospital we will often have students from various specialities come to the unit to gain experience during their studies. They could be:
- Midwives
- Doctors
- Paramedics
- Nurses
- Occupational therapists
The students can be at various stages of their training and may be male or female. They always appreciate your permission to watch or participate in any part of your care as this experience is vital to their training. It is your decision as to whether you will allow any student to participate or watch any or all of your care. You can also decline students altogether.
