Our team of community midwives will care for you throughout your pregnancy.
Your midwife will meet with you regularly to see how you and your baby are doing and arrange any additional follow up or appointments with our medical team if necessary. You will be offered a number of screening tests for you and your baby by your community midwife. It is entirely your choice whether or not to undergo screening. Pregnancy can be a difficult time, so building a good relationship with your community midwife is important so that they can tailor the care they provide to your individual needs.
You will often have appointments with your community midwife in your GP surgery, but they also come and visit you at home too. They run various parent education events in and around the city to help prepare you for labour and birth as well as how to care for a new baby. Community midwives can also help you seek out the best pregnancy advice and will give you the contact information you will need if you need help urgently.
Once you have had your baby, your midwife will visit you at home to check the health of you and your baby. They will offer you some further screening tests and make sure you feel confident in caring for your baby. Your community midwife may still see you up to 4 weeks after your baby is born but most of the time they will transfer your care to a health visitor at around day 10.
How to arrange your booking appointment
Contact a GP or midwife as soon as possible after you find out that you’re pregnant. The ideal time for a booking appointment with the midwife is before you are 10 weeks pregnant.

If you live outside of Newcastle
If you live outside the Newcastle area, your community midwife will not be an RVI community midwife. They will be from whichever hospital is more local to you. For example if you live in Gateshead with a Gateshead GP but have chosen to come to the RVI, your community midwife will come from the QE Hospital.
