A message from the team
Diabetes carries serious risks in pregnancy, so we recommend that you follow the advice of your specialist team regarding management of your blood glucose levels and attend all your appointments.
If you have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, the diabetes specialist nurses at the Newcastle Diabetes Centre (at the Centre for Ageing and Vitality) will provide their helpline number to support you with high blood glucose readings, hypoglycaemia, sick day rules or other diabetes related concerns.
For any pregnancy related or out of hour’s concerns, please contact the maternity assessment unit on 0191 282 5748.
Students
As a teaching hospital we will often have students from various specialities come to our maternity service. This is so they gain experience during their studies. They could be:
- Midwives
- Doctors
- Paramedics
- Nurses
- Occupational therapists
The students can be at various stages of their training and may be male or female. They always appreciate your permission to watch or participate in any part of your care. This experience is vital to their training. It is your decision as to whether you will allow any student to participate or watch any or all of your care. You can also decline students altogether.
