BSG President’s Medal 2022 Recipient: Dr Stuart McPherson
Congratulations to Dr Stuart McPherson for being awared the BSG President’s medal.
Stuart’s medal was awarded to acknowledge the huge contribution that he made to the BSG both informally and in his role as Senior Secretary of the BSG. His determination in ensuring that the BSG delivered a successful BSG Campus and the Virtual Annual Meeting, despite the changing goal posts and frustrations at not being able to hold a face to face meeting was hugely important. Due to COVID Stuart was unable to run a face to face conference, but he adapted, with good humour and hard work, to deliver the conferences online.

Top academics shortlisted for prestigious Newton Prize
Leading academics from Newcastle have been shortlisted for the 2020 Newton Prize for their international study into liver cancer.
Professors Helen Reeves and Fiona Oakley’s research aims to better understand liver cancer by identifying new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in the blood to halt the progression of the disease.
Liver cancer is the fifth common cancer worldwide and it develops from chronic liver diseases, including cirrhosis, fibrosis, viral hepatitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The Newcastle experts are working with Dr Marco Zaki, from Minia University, Egypt, on their research project.
The Newton Prize would help us to further develop our important study to advance understanding of liver cancer
