If you are a GP and have a patient who has undergone TPIAT, and you require advice please contact the TPIAT clinical nurse specialist or the patient’s consultant secretary and this can be arranged.

If you are caring for a patient who has underwent TPIAT and they have presented to your emergency department, or they are an inpatient locally and you require advice on their ongoing management please contact the Freeman Switchboard and ask to speak with the HPB registrar on-call.
Referral criteria
There is an inclusion and exclusion criteria for those suitable for TPIAT.
Inclusion criteria
- TPIAT should be reserved for patients with intractable recurrent acute, chronic, or hereditary pancreatitis who have failed concerted prior treatment efforts to control recurrent pancreatitis or constant pain, because of the risk of ongoing post-operative pain and new onset diabetes.
Exclusion criteria
This excludes patients with specific medical conditions:
- C-peptide negative diabetes
- Type 1 diabetes
- Portal vein thrombosis
- Portal hypertension
- Significant parenchymal liver disease
- High-risk cardiorespiratory disease
- Pancreatic cancer
Patients with a poor support network are a relative contraindication and long-term management of pancreas enzyme supplementation and diabetes care. We will assess this within the with multi-disciplinary team.

How to refer
If you are a patient please discuss this with your local gastroenterology or surgical team currently managing the care of your pancreatitis.
