Our hospital offers a specialist service for the diagnosis and pain management of spinal problems in both children and adults.
We’re one of very few units in the country with a dedicated service for children, with specially trained clinical staff, advanced paediatric facilities and a paediatric intensive care unit.
Newcastle Hospitals, including the Great North Children’s Hospital, are one of the busiest centres in the UK treating scoliosis, with a dedicated highly specialist team of professionals, using the latest techniques and equipment.
What is scoliosis?
- Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine to the side.
- While the actual twisting and curving of the spine can often be seen, other visible signs of a scoliosis can include uneven shoulders, ribs poking out on one side and an uneven waist.
- Approximately 5% of the population have scoliosis.
We aim to support people with scoliosis and tailor the care we provide according to their individual needs, putting them at the centre of everything we do whilst also providing support for families. Providing exceptional care is at the heart of everything we do.
Scoliosis treatment
Treatment for scoliosis can vary depending on a number of factors including the age of the patient and the severity of the curve.
It can range from close monitoring in our dedicated scoliosis clinics with regular x ray follow-up to surgical correction of the curve.
We also offer Halo-Gravity traction treatment for some scoliosis patients.
