The children’s cystic fibrosis (CF) service is part of the respiratory department at the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH).
We are a regional centre providing specialist care for approximately 180 children with CF across the North East and Cumbria. We care for children from birth to 16-18 years old when they transfer to adult services.
The service consists of a specialist multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, pharmacist, physiologists, social worker and administrative staff.
Most referrals now come from the cystic fibrosis new-born screening programme.
Lifelong care
CF is a complex genetic condition affecting primarily the lungs and digestive system but can affect many other body systems. It is a lifelong condition requiring daily treatment and frequent monitoring. Most of our patients are reviewed every 6-8 weeks.
We provide high quality specialist care for children with cystic fibrosis, working closely with families and provide frequent reviews to detect and treat early potential complications that can affect long-term outcomes and quality of life.
The children’s CF team provide twice-weekly clinics in Newcastle at GNCH and monthly clinics in Sunderland and Bishop Auckland. We also provide shared care services with a local CF team in Cumbria, attending joint clinics in Carlisle and Workington.
We work closely with the Newcastle adult CF service and offer transition clinics for young people (14-18 years).
