Our children’s neurology department is the only specialist neurology service in the North East and Cumbria.
We provide highly advanced treatments for disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.
This includes treatment for:
- epilepsy and seizures
- cerebral palsy
- head injuries
- strokes and meningitis
- neurometabolic disorders (diseases affecting brain chemicals)
- movement disorders.
Neurology expertise
We are one of only two centres designated by the World Health Organisation for muscle disease in the UK, and one of only three centres in the country to diagnose and treat mitochondrial disease.
Our particular areas of expertise include:
- epilepsy
- neuromuscular diseases
- mitochondrial disease
- developmental disorders
Rehabilitation
After treatment, it’s essential to help children to resume their normal lives as quickly and smoothly as possible. So we have specialist rehabilitation services, such as for those children recovering from severe head injuries.
Services across the region
Most of our services are provided in the children’s wards at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle.
We also work with the hospital’s child development centre to evaluate and treat complex neurological developmental disorders.
If you don’t live in Newcastle, you can still use our services through our outreach clinics – so your child shouldn’t have to travel too far to be seen by one of our specialists.
We also provide advice to colleagues treating young patients in intensive care units across the region.
