The children and young people’s clinic cares for children and young people with a range of genital conditions. We also see children and young people with concerns about sexual abuse.
Children and young people can be referred to our care by their GP or a doctor from another hospital. The Police or Children’s Services also refer children and young people to our service.

Our experienced team is led by consultant paediatricians with specialist training in managing genital conditions, child protection and forensic practice. We are supported by forensic children’s nurses, who also deliver sexual health clinics.

Our clinic is based at the Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI. We have a comfortable and friendly, family-focused environment.
If you would like any more information about the assessment prior to the assessment our specialist nurses will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

The PFN provides a 24/7 service for the assessment of children and young people up to the age of 16 years who have experienced sexual assault or sexual abuse within the preceding 7 days. It functions as a Paediatric Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC). Children are referred by the Police or Children’s Social Care and we cover the North East region.
Our experienced team include Consultant Paediatricians with specialist training in managing genital conditions, child protection and forensic practice. They will be supported by Forensic Children’s Nurses, who also deliver sexual health clinics
The staff provide a holistic assessment and support for children and young people following sexual abuse or sexual assault undertaking a forensic examination and providing post assault care including emergency contraception, investigation and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and post HIV exposure treatment.
Onward referrals are made for counselling. The PFN team ensures that the child and young person and their parents or carers are supported throughout their visit to the clinic. Follow up care is provided including telephone and clinic appointments.
