The opticians (optometrists) department undertake a wide range of clinics including testing vision to assessing patients after their eye operations.

We provide a wide range of services, including:
- Refraction test
- Contact lens fitting
- Low vision assessments
- Glaucoma assessments
- Yag Capsulotomy – a procedure to remove a very thin membrane called the Capsule after cataract surgery.
- Dispensing – a specialist spectacle dispensing service for patients who can’t be fitted with ready-made frames

We are based in Eye Department at the New Victoria Wing in the RVI.
Staff you’ll meet
You’ll be cared for by a number of different staff including opticians, visual field technicians and clerical staff.
Things you need to know
- Patients with appointments in the Opticians Department should check-in at the dedicated opticians’ reception.
- Please follow the signs from the main reception at Eye Department.
Research and education
Optometrists undertake accurate vision assessments on patients recruited to a large number of trials and studies. We are actively involved in a number of medical audits and are committed to regular Continuing Education and Development.
We provide training to undergraduate optometry students, pre-registration Optometrists, medical and nursing staff, and other health professionals.
