The Sensational Thinking Project was initially established within the Newcastle Hospitals’ Community Occupational Therapy Team in 2018.
The project was initially in response to a significant increase of referrals to Occupational Therapy for children experiencing sensory processing differences which were impacting upon their engagement in everyday activities, function and development.
With the support of the wider Occupational Therapy team along with funding received from The Great North Children’s Hospital “Bright Ideas Award’, the project was officially launched in 2018.
During this time it has seen the development and delivery of comprehensive training packages available for to parents, schools and practitioners.
NHS England support
In 2021 The Sensational Thinking Project was delighted to be awarded funding from NHS England and NHS Improvement.
This funding has supported the development of a model for the acute paediatric hospital that fosters and nurtures sensory friendly environments and experiences and is co-produced with key stakeholders.
The project is also generously supported by a number of local businesses and teams with Team Evie most recently supporting with the provision of pre-school sensory kits and guides to promote sensory development for high-risk infants during their stay in hospital.
