The respiratory and tracheal service provide treatment for children with a range of respiratory problems within the Children’s Heart Unit.
Children with congenital or acquired heart disease are much more likely to have respiratory problems. We provide a comprehensive service, including:
- pre-operative assessment
- care on the intensive care unit
- post-operative support.
Paediatric heart transplant recipients are at increased risk of developing respiratory problems. Therefore, we work closely with paediatric cardiology to make sure any respiratory problems are well managed.
Treatments
Children’s airway services
Tracheostomies are a surgically-made hole in the wind-pipe, in which a tube is inserted into the hole to help the child breathe.
The service is run by two surgeons and two respiratory paediatricians, along with the Ear, Nose and Throat team (ENT) who run regular airways clinics.
Our paediatric home ventilation service helps children who need long-term support to be cared for at home. This service is run by two respiratory paediatricians, a nurse specialist and a physiotherapist.
Tracheal treatments
We provide a range of treatment for problems associated with the trachea.
These include:
- Tracheal stenosis (narrowing of the windpipe)
- Vascular compression (compression of the airway by big blood vessels)
- Tracheo-bronchomalacia (softening or damage to the airway).
- Many other rare tracheal conditions
