Mammographers
Mammographer is a term used to describe a clinician who is qualified to carry our screening mammography. They can be:
Radiographers
Radiographers are at the heart of modern scanning medicine. They use a range of different imaging techniques using sophisticated equipment to produce high quality images of all parts of the body and conditions affecting them.
All radiographers in Newcastle’s breast screening programme have a degree in radiography (or equivalent), and a post-graduate certificate in mammography. They are all highly skilled and specialised and are registered with the Health Professions Council.
Assistant practitioners
Assistant practitioners also use imaging techniques using sophisticated equipment to produce high quality screening mammograms.
All APs in Newcastle’s Breast Screening Unit have undertaken a certificate of higher education in mammography and work under the indirect supervision of a radiographer.
The breast care nurses
We also have Breast Care Nurses who help patients with all aspects of breast disease, screening and treatment.
