All children and families are entitled to support from a health visitor and a school nurse. This is a free service which is provided by the NHS.
When a woman is pregnant or a child under 5 is adopted, you will be allocated a health visitor. All children between the ages of 5 years and 19 are eligible for support from their school nurse. The school nurse can also provide some services for those children who are educated out of school.
Following an assessment, it may be identified that some babies and children need extra support. The health visitor or school nurse will work with the family to decide which type of professional is the best to provide that support.
The 0-19 team, work in partnership with other agencies. This group is known as Children and Families Newcastle and is a part of Collaborative Newcastle.
This collaboration aims to transform the health, wealth and wellbeing of everyone in the city.
The health visiting and school health service is made up of health visitors, public health school nurses, community staff nurses, nursery nurses, school health workers, nursing associates and administrative staff.
The teams work with families and other agencies to support children and their families to be healthy. We are guided by The Healthy Child Programme which sets out which developmental reviews are needed and the common topics that families require help with.
We will provide you with evidenced based health information and guidance to support all areas of parenting and promoting healthy choices from pregnancy until the age of 19. We can provide early intervention support to those children, young people and families that need it.
