- The Clearway is a cough assist device that can be used to assist in the removal of airway secretions.
- It is usually powered via mains power. An external battery may be issued if required.
- It is used to deliver deep breaths (positive pressure), usually followed by a cough breath (negative pressure).
- It can be used with a mouthpiece, face mask or via a tracheostomy.
- The device is used with a specific circuit.
- A bacterial/viral filter should be present.
- The thin pressure line needs to be connected at the patient end of the circuit and to the device.
- A preset programme will be saved and the settings locked.
- +2 recruitment breaths may be set at the end of the cycle.
- You may need to increase the frequency of Clearway use during a chest infection.
Device maintenance
- The dust filter at the back needs to be checked monthly and changed when dirty.
- The bacterial filter in the circuit needs to be changed at least monthly or when soiled.
- The mask should be washed with soap and water every day.
