One way to follow your child’s lead is to sensitively copy what your child does, as they do it. This includes mirroring your child’s facial expressions, actions, words and/or sounds.
You may hear or read different words such as mirroring, copying or imitating your child. This may be confusing but these words mean the same thing.
Only mirror the actions, sounds and behaviours that you want to encourage your child to use more.
By mirroring you are:
- Helping your child to notice you and get an interaction started.
- Joining in with your child’s style of communication and play.
- Showing them that you are interested in what they are doing.
Teaching your child that their play and communication is valued. This will encourage them to communicate more.
