A lack of regional OSCE training resources for internationally recruited paediatric nurses led to a collaboration between experts at the Great North Children’s Hospital and surrounding children’s hospitals to establish high quality support.
All overseas nurses – or those who have not practiced for some time – must complete a NMC Test of Competence and includes a practical examination known as the OSCE which tests clinical and communication skills.
There is well established provision for adult internationally recruited nurses nation-wide but less so for paediatric nurses.
As the team at Newcastle Hospitals has greater experience recruiting from overseas into paediatrics, they forged a collaborative approach with nursing, IR recruitment and clinical educator colleagues from surrounding trusts to develop a regional Paediatric OSCE Bootcamp hosted at the Great North Children’s Hospital.
The programme includes a ten day bootcamp, wrap-around pastoral support and educational and training support provided throughout the run up to the OSCE and on the examination day itself.
The team is delighted to have been shortlisted for the success of their collaborative approach – supporting a number of newly appointed paediatric nurses at surrounding trusts alongside our own – recognising how passionate they are about their collective responsibility towards supporting internationally educated nurses who have chosen this part of the world as their new home.
