Dr Chris Lamb has been awarded the 2023 Sir Francis Avery Jones Medal from the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) for his work in translational gastroenterology research.
This award is highly prestigious within its field – previous winners include Professor Chris Day, Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, and Professor Dave Jones, Professor of Liver Immunology at Newcastle University and Director of the Newcastle Health Innovation Partners Academy.

Chris is an Honorary Gastroenterologist at Newcastle Hospitals and a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Gastroenterology in Immunity and Inflammation at the Translational & Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University.
He is also an emerging leader in the NIHR Newcastle BRC’s liver disease, multimorbidity and lifestyle research theme and uses multi-omic approaches to study precision medicine in inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease).
Chris said: “I’m honoured and humbled to win this highly competitive award. It is recognition of our research programme in inflammatory bowel disease here in Newcastle and the outstanding healthcare and academic collaborators we value working with across the UK and internationally. This prize highlights Newcastle as a leading centre internationally for research in gastroenterology and hepatology.
I hope to take the opportunity of receiving this prize and delivering a state of the art lecture to share my perspective that grounding research in clinical knowledge and experience can tackle the greatest areas of unmet healthcare need.
By describing personal experience of research and innovation, sustained by mentorship and a supportive network I would like to demonstrate to all clinicians in training or fully qualified, that research is accessible, fun, benefits patients and can be started at any career stage.”

The annual Sir Francis Avery Jones (FAJ) BSG Research Award encourages research by gastroenterologists working in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The award includes an opportunity to deliver a lecture at the BSG Annual Meeting.
