Newcastle Hospitals has announced that Sir James Mackey has been appointed as our new Chief Executive. This follows a competitive recruitment process and was approved by the Council of Governors at a meeting earlier today (16th October).
Sir James is a nationally recognised NHS leader with over 20 years’ experience as a Chief Executive and a track record in leading high performing organisations.
Sir James said: “I am delighted to be appointed as Chief Executive of Newcastle Hospitals. I have always been very proud to work in the NHS and I’m excited to take on this new challenge and become part of the ambitious team in Newcastle. This will be a critical time for the trust as we work through the impacts of the last few years and ensure that patients remain truly at the centre of everything we do.
“My heart has always been in the North East and it’s a privilege to have been appointed to lead one of largest teaching trusts in England and one that plays an essential role in the health and wellbeing of patients across the region.
“It is fair to say that the NHS is evolving. Not only must providers focus on delivering the best possible care for patients alongside ensuring staff have the best possible experience, we need to ensure we are collaborating across organisational boundaries to drive improvements and ensure seamless pathways of care for patients. I am therefore looking forward to working with partners to ensure health and care services across the North are the best they can possibly be for the communities we serve.”
Professor Sir John Burn said: “I am delighted that Jim has been appointed as our Chief Executive and look forward to welcoming him to the trust.
“He brings a unique combination of local knowledge, strong credentials as a successful NHS Chief Executive and the extensive influence that comes from his national roles. I know this will underpin his success as he approaches this new challenge in Newcastle.”
Sir James will formally take up this role in the coming months and will also be stepping down from his extended role with NHS England as Interim Chief Operating Officer. He will however continue to lead the national elective recovery programme and will also Chair the NHS Customer Board for Procurement and Supply.
Sir James will replace Dame Jackie Daniel who announced her intention to step down in August.
