Newcastle’s Work-based Learning team recently celebrated as they enrolled their newest cohort of trainee nursing associates in partnership with Teesside University.
A competitive pathway into nursing, the trainee nursing associate degree apprenticeship has proven to be a popular progression route for clinical staff and currently represents over ten percent of our enrolled apprentices.
Newcastle Hospitals have offered apprenticeship opportunities since the apprenticeship levy was introduced in April 2017. The levy is a financial contribution paid by employers and reinvested to fund training opportunities for its staff.
To date (Friday 24 May 2024), 1020 apprentices have enrolled on an apprenticeship at the Newcastle Hospitals – training to become future nurses, administrators, radiographers, chartered managers, healthcare support workers and many more professions!
Developing our workforce
Newcastle Hospitals is one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals serving patients from Newcastle, the wider North East, across the UK and internationally.
The apprenticeship levy provides the opportunity to maximise apprenticeships within the NHS, developing the existing and future workforce.
The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan focuses on retaining existing and attracting new talent and apprenticeships play a huge part in delivering that aim.
Apprenticeships combine a paid role with training and study for a specific occupation. With no upper age limit, apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers. They’re for anyone eligible aged 16+ across many levels and subject areas.
Work-based Learning Manager, Eleanor Jarvis said, “Apprenticeships have proven to be a remarkable success at Newcastle Hospitals supporting many NHS career pathways, the local labour market and development opportunities to the existing workforce.
“In addition, our apprenticeship offer has allowed many the opportunity to reskill or advance into managerial roles, expanding the diversity of apprenticeships throughout the Trust.
“Newcastle Hospitals offer apprenticeships in a variety of positions, providing an alternative approach to a career in the NHS. We have apprentices working in clinical and non-clinical roles from level 2 through to master’s level 7, ensuring a pathway for all.
As a Trust, we are delighted to have accomplished this milestone while collaborating with regional and national partners.
