Ward 16 is an adult neurosurgical ward which provides care and treatment for patients undergoing various neurosurgical investigations and operations. We see patients who need both planned and emergency surgery.
Several specialist nurses are also available for advice and support for conditions affecting the brain and nervous system, including
- Head Injury
- Neuro-oncology (brain tumours)
- Pain specialists
Staff you are likely to meet
Our clinical team is made up of consultant neurosurgeons, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other support staff.
Things you need to know
- Nursing staff are always available for information regarding a patient’s treatment and progress. An ‘con-call’ team cover the ward from 4pm and at weekends so may be different to your consultant’s team.
- If you are admitted for elective surgery you will be advised of the likely length of hospital stay at your pre-admission clinic appointment.
- If you require a longer period of rehabilitation or treatment and are from outside Newcastle you will be referred back to your local hospital. We do understand this may be upsetting for some patients and their carers but it is vital we adhere to this policy to ensure we can continue to admit all emergency cases as quickly as possible.
Visiting times
Visiting times are between 2pm and 4pm and 6pm and 8pm every day.
We do appreciate that visitors may have a long way to travel and visiting outside of these set times may be arranged in certain circumstances and at the discretion of the nurse in charge.
Location of ward
Ward 16 is located on level five of the New Victoria Wing at the RVI.
