Ward 34 is a specialist cancer ward caring for patients with different types of cancers and blood-related (haematological) cancers.
it also is home to the Teenage and young adult unit.
We also care for patients with non-cancerous conditions requiring chemotherapy treatment and other blood-related (haematology) conditions.
Ward 34 administers systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT), supportive treatments including blood transfusions, and cares for patients undergoing radiotherapy, autologous bone marrow transplant, palliative care and those with treatment-related side effects.
You will be cared for by several different members of staff including cancer doctors, nurses who administer chemotherapy, support nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and other support staff.
Facilities on ward 34
The ward has a patient fridge, a dayroom with TV and reclining chairs. Reading material and games are available. There are also Hospedia TVs available for all patients and free hospital WiFi
Teenage and young adult unit
Our Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Unit is also based on Ward 34. We also have a range of dedicated specialists who work within the young adult service.
We are a Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for the North East of England and work closely with other designated cancer or haematology services within this region to provide expert care and support for young adults throughout their cancer treatment.
The unit has seven dedicated teenage and young adult beds. Four in single sex bays and three in en suite cubicles. You can personalise your bed space by bringing in your own pillow, duvet or photos. We also provide a graffiti wall for leaving messages of encouragement or information for other patients.
The Teenage Cancer Trust has a break-out area with a pool table and access to a computer and Sky TV.
There is a day room with kitchen area, sofas, Sky TV with full sports and film packages. It also has a digital juke box updated every two weeks, a Playstation and 3D television.
Ward visiting times
2-4pm and 6-8pm Monday-Friday
2-8pm Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.
Teenage and Young adult unit
The ward has an open visiting policy for Young Adults and there is some provision for a carer, family member, friend or partner to stay with you overnight.
Location of ward
Ward 34 is located on Level 3 of the Northern Centre for Cancer Care and Renal Services based at the Freeman Hospital.
Come through the main entrance for the Northern Centre for Cancer Care and take the lift or stairs on your right hand side up to Level 3.
When you come out of the lift turn to your right and walk straight ahead past the large waiting area on your right and overlooking the courtyard on your left.
Walk through the double doors ahead of you and turn right where you see the sign for Ward 33 and continue down this corridor around 30 paces until you reach Ward 34
