Ward 24/24a is the Coronary care unit for the North East of England providing high-dependency care for adults with heart conditions.
You will come to this ward if you need any of the following treatments:
- Angioplasty or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (balloon and stent treatment for narrowed or blocked coronary arteries)
- Insertion of heart devices such as defibrillators and pacemakers
- Procedures (including ablation, or RFA) for abnormal heart rhythms
- Management of heart failure
We will also care for you if you need major heart surgery such as a valve replacement and heart bypass grafts and if you are waiting for a heart transplantation.
You may be referred from another part of the UK or Northern Ireland as the Freeman Hospital is a specialist centre.
You will be cared for by several staff in the clinical team and we have a range of other additional support staff on the ward.
Ward visiting times
- Monday to Friday 2-4pm and 6-8pm
- Saturday and Sunday 2-8pm
Location of ward
Ward 24/24a is based at the Cardiothoracic Centre. This is set to the right of the Freeman Hospital as you look at the front.
Come into the Cardiothoracic Centre and take a right turn round by the reception desk.
Turn left and follow the corridor, past the Lung Function Department, until you reach the end. You will find Ward 24/24a on the left hand side.
