Ward 21 is an adult cardiothoracic critical care unit which specialises in caring for patients who have had complex heart and lung surgery.
Ward 21 is an open-plan ward to allow close observation and safe care, each bay has a curtain which can be pulled across to maintain your dignity and privacy.
You may be cared for in a separate cubicle for infection control purposes.
You will be cared for by a nurse who will be looking after one or two patients on the ward. A doctor will be readily available to answer any questions or an appointment can be made to speak to the doctor.
You will also be visited regularly by a physiotherapist to help you clear your chest and help with any exercise.
You will be admitted to this ward following a:
- coronary bypass grafts
- valve replacement
- heart and lung transplantation.
You may be transferred here from another part of the UK or from Northern Ireland as we are specialists in complex cardiothoracic care.
Ward visiting times
Our visiting times are 2pm to 7pm every day.
Flexible visiting is available following discussion with the nurse in charge.
Only two visitors are allowed at the bedside at any time. If your relative has had a transplant, then visiting is restricted to the same two family members only.
Please ring the ward doorbell and wait for a member of staff to answer.
- When entering the unit, remove your coat (if any) and leave this on the hooks provided.
Please remember to take any valuables with you. - If you are unwell, please do not visit the Unit.
Location of ward
Ward 21 is in the Cardiothoracic Centre. From the Main Entrance of the Cardiothoracic Centre, turn right and follow the corridor past the Lung Function Department until you see the lifts or stairs on your left.
Take the lift or stairs up to level 3. Turn right from the lift, or left at the top of the stairs, and then turn left.
Follow the corridor round until you reach the Theatre entrance. Turn right and continue down the corridor until you reach Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit (Ward 21) on the left.
