My name is Michelle Wray and I have worked as a health care assistant for 8 and a half years in the Emergency Department at the RVI.
Before I started my job here, I completed the Healthcare Academy. I was extremely grateful to have the opportunity to start off in the Academy as before that, I didn’t even know how to put a blood pressure cuff on.
I was a carer before I got this job, but I had never worked in a hospital environment before, so I was extremely nervous on my first day.
My mentor – who I was so thankful for – supported me and taught me everything I needed to know and is the reason why my skills have developed so much over the years.
As a healthcare assistant working in the Emergency Department I check patients’ observations, complete ECGs, take bloods and cannulate.
I have even carried out CPR in the resuscitation area.
The job can be extremely hard going and challenging at times but it’s the most amazing and rewarding job I have ever had.
I wouldn’t change it for the world.
