I had been thinking about whether or not I wanted to pursue a career as a nurse but didn’t have any healthcare experience so decided to try working as a healthcare assistant (HCA).
My HCA journey started in October 2015 when I attended the HCA Academy which was a really valuable experience.
I worked full time as a HCA for 10 months on a spinal orthopaedic ward at the RVI and absolutely loved it. Then decided to progress.
I joined Northumbria University in September 2016 to start my nursing degree and started working as a fully qualified staff nurse three years later.
I cannot recommend becoming a health care support worker enough. Especially if you want to pursue a career in a hands-on clinical role such as a nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or doctor.
This role helped me to understand the importance of process and routines, excellent bed side manner and communication, and to gain overall confidence.
I am now a Junior Sister on an elderly care ward at the Freeman Hospital.
I truly believe my experience as a healthcare assistant has been a huge benefit to my current role as I am able to relate and sympathise with colleagues at all levels.
