Hello, my name is Lisa Guthrie and I am Deputy Chief Nurse at the Newcastle Hospitals.
My key roles include being the Professional Nursing Lead for the Royal Victoria Infirmary, as well as having a Trust-wide strategic portfolio for Research, Practice, Education and Workforce.
I also lead on the provision of safe effective care and recruitment and retention of nursing and midwifery staff.
I have been a registered nurse for 30 years, starting my career in critical care before moving into research. Previous roles have included being a Project Manager and Assistant Specialty Manager, and I have a broad academic background including a Sociology Degree from Durham University.
Prior to taking up my current role, I held an Associate Director of Nursing role and a number of Matron posts spanning outpatient, inpatient and critical care roles.
I am a firm believer in taking a patient focused approach in all that we do, and am motivated to maintain high standards for patients, lead improvement and work with staff to build a culture which supports change and continuous learning.
Role modelling professional and leadership behaviours
I have an interest in career coaching and am a Trust Contact Officer. I’m also a staunch advocate for role modelling professional and leadership behaviours which I believe results in a direct, positive impact on nursing and the patient experience, and I value honesty, reliability, commitment and optimism.
With responsibility for the development and delivery of high clinical standards of care, clinical policies and protocols for nursing and midwifery in line with evidence-based practice, I contribute to the identification of practice and professional development needs of nursing and midwifery staff.
I provide expert advice and support to senior leaders in relation to issues of professional practice and support the delivery of high quality patient centred care through the operational and strategic development of nurses and nursing, underpinning the strategic objectives of the Trust.
Passion for high quality staff experience
I am passionate about the importance of providing professional leadership by acting as a role model and supporting aspiring nurse leaders, contributing to the development and implementation of the Trust’s Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Strategy.
By harnessing professional judgment, gained from extensive experience, and professional, clinical, and managerial knowledge, I am adept at interpreting and addressing a wide variety of operational and strategic issues.
Proud to be part of a high motivated, enthusiastic team which places patient and staff experience at the forefront, I have a key corporate leadership role within the organisation, with responsibility for working closely with senior clinical leaders and managers to develop highly effective nursing practice to improve quality of care and outcomes for patients.
