Professor Muzlifah Haniffa is a Consultant Dermatologist and Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Professor Haniffa specialises in skin immunology and conducts general and Cutaneous T cell lymphoma clinics.
As well as providing patient care at the RVI, Muzlifah teaches medical students, mentors clinical trainees and contributes to the global Human Cell Atlas initiative:

Muzlifah is Professor of Dermatology and Immunology at Newcastle University, Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science, and a Lister Institute Prize Fellow. Muzlifah’s research has been recognised by a number of national and international awards including the Foulkes Foundation Medal in 2019. She was elected to the prestigious Academy of Medical Sciences in 2020.
Muzlifah pioneered the applications of single cell genomics technologies to understand tissue homeostasis, immunity and disease pathogenesis across the human lifespan. A major research goal of her laboratory is to decode the development and functional maturation of the human immune system.
Skin and Oral Disease
Professor Haniffa leads Newcastle University’s Biomedical Research Centre’s Skin and Oral Disease research – one of the key themes for the Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) – a £5.5 million clinical research facility funded by the Wellcome Trust and Wolfson Foundation and located on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality.
