Mr Sohom Maitra (MBBS MRCS PgC(MedEd) FAcadMEd FHEA FRCP(Edin) FRCEM) – is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the RVI’s Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre where he specialises in Major Trauma, Point of care Ultrasound and Medical Education. He also holds soft tissue injury clinics.
A Newcastle University graduate in 2002 Mr Maitra completed his Higher Specialist training in the Northern Region with overseas training in Trauma, Trauma Surgery and Emergency Medicine carried out in Liverpool Hospital, Sydney – Australia.
He commenced his post as Consultant in January 2012 and has held Trust roles as Trust Medical Education and Foundation Tutor 2014-2020 and inaugural Guardian of Safe Working Hours 2016-2018.
He has been Training Programme Director (TPD) for ACCS (2014-Present) and (2016-Present) is Lead TPD Doctors with Differing Needs (DWDNs) and ARCP for ACCS, Higher Emergency and Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine.
Mr Maitra had tenure as Vice-Chair, of the North East Regional Emergency Medicine (RCEM) Board (2016-2019) and is in post as Chair 2019-2021, currently.
In 2017, he gained Membership of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy with subsequent Fellowship of AoME in autumn 2021. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2021 for contribution to Medicine and Emergency Medicine.
