Research
Mr Truran has many peer reviewed publications. He is the principal investigator for the IoN trial (Iodine or Not). This randomised trial is investigating the use of radioiodine in low risk thyroid cancer and Newcastle hospitals is the lead recruiter nationally. His other research includes utilising a novel blood test (circulation tumour cells) to detect thyroid cancer cells in the blood. This will hopefully lead to breakthroughs in the diagnosis and management of thyroid cancer.
He is also collaborating with Northumbria University and the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust (the UK’s thyroid cancer charity) to investigate the impact of thyroid cancer, and its treatment, on patients’ quality of life.
Training
Mr Truran has been a faculty member on national thyroidectomy courses and trauma surgery courses. He is an established trainer for junior surgeons and an educational supervisor. The endocrine surgical department also offers a rotating fellowship post under his supervision. The whole department is very keen on ensuring that the next generation of endocrine surgeons can provide not just expert surgery but a holistic patient centred approach.
