Mr Omar A. Ahmed is a consultant plastic surgeon at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with a special interest in head and neck reconstruction and facial reanimation surgery.
Mr Ahmed has over 26 years’ experience in plastic surgery. He developed a special interest in head and neck reconstruction and facial reanimation surgery early on his training, and was fortunate to train in UK units which specialised in these procedures. Mr Ahmed is currently the departmental clinical lead for Head and neck surgery and facial palsy.
He is a member of the head and neck, skin cancer, and facial palsy multidisciplinary teams. Mr Ahmed was instrumental in establishing the adult facial palsy service in Newcastle in 2006. This is the first and only ‘one stop shop’ for facial palsy in the North East of England. This service is now one of the busiest of its kind in the country. He is continually trying to learn new surgical techniques in his fields of interest, with the aim of providing the best possible functional and aesthetic outcomes for patients.
Mr Ahmed is a member of the BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons), BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons), BAHNO (British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists), the Royal Society of Medicine, the Sir Charles Bell Society for the Study of the Facial Nerve, and the British Medical Association.
He is the plastic surgery representative on BAHNO Council and is on the Medical Advisory Board of Facial Palsy UK, the only UK-based facial palsy charity. He is also heavily involved with education and training of junior doctors and medical students.
In addition, Mr Ahmed is an examiner for the Intercollegiate Board Examination in Plastic Surgery (FRCS Plast), a faculty member of at least 8 courses annually, and a convenor for BAPRAS Advanced Educational Courses.
