Mr Juan Berner is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon with an interest in complex head and neck and extremity reconstruction. He specialises in using microsurgery for reconstructing patients undergoing cancer treatment or who have suffered from major trauma.
Mr Berner was born in Chile and attended medical school at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, in Santiago. Subsequently, he relocated to the UK pursuing postgraduate surgical experience. He initially trained in Southmead Hospital in Bristol and Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. This was followed by two prestigious microsurgical fellowships, in Newcastle and St Thomas Hospital, London. Mr Berner is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Mr Berner is academically active, publishing regularly in scientific peer-reviewed journals. In 2019 he was awarded a MSc in Surgical Science and Practice by the University of Oxford and is currently working towards obtaining a Doctorate in Philosophy in the same institution. His research interests include microsurgical innovations, human factors, and the impact of clinical guidelines for major trauma in middle and low-income countries. He has also been honoured with the Barron Prize by the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).
Mr Berner is a core member of the head and neck cancer and limb reconstruction multidisciplinary teams, along with contributing to the management of patients with lymphoedema, diabetic foot and chronic limb pain.
