Mr John Henton is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the RVI specialising in breast reconstruction, limb reconstruction, lymphoedema surgery.
His special interests in particular are breast reconstruction with autologous tissues (DIEP, Bi-pedicled DIEP, TUG flaps), extremity reconstruction following major trauma (management of open long bone fractures), general plastics, lymphoedema.
Mr Henton attended medical school in London and trained in Plastic Surgery at several London hospitals, Bristol, Salisbury, Slough, Durham, Middlesbrough and Newcastle. He completed an MSc in surgical science at Imperial College London, for which he was awarded a distinction.
Mr Henton’s research project and thesis involved investigating free flap perfusion in lower limb free flap reconstructions performed for trauma. He undertook a microsurgical fellowship at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.
There he gained experience of autologous breast reconstruction, including complex microsurgical cases such as bi-pedicled DIEP flaps and stacked TUG flaps for patients who may not traditionally have been considered suitable for microsurgical reconstruction, due to a perceived lack of donor tissue. His other main interest is working collaboratively with orthopaedic colleagues to reconstruct open long bone fracture injuries.
Most of Mr Henton’s publications concern breast and lower limb reconstruction and he regularly peer-review articles for both a plastic surgery journal and a more general medical journal.
