Mr O’Donoghue graduated from University College Galway in 1988. He completed his training in Plastic Surgery with a specialist fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at the Marie Curie Institute in Paris. He has over 20 years’ experience as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the NHS.
Special interests
Mr O’Donoghue has a special interest in all areas of breast reconstruction and in particular microsurgical breast reconstruction. He also attends the breast cancer MDT and a breast cancer results clinic on a weekly basis and is involved with the breast cancer team in the treatment of patients with breast cancer having previously been breast cancer services lead at the Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust for 4 years. He has been involved in and led many projects with his national Associations BAPRAS and the Association of Breast Surgeons to improve the teaching and training of breast cancer and reconstruction surgeons as well as the delivery of service improvements to patients in his roles as Chair of Education and Research, Chair of the Breast Special Interest Group and Honorary Secretary to BAPRAS.
Research
Mr O’Donoghue completed two Masters degrees at the National University of Ireland. One in Medical Education and the other in Surgery by laboratory based research into the cell biology of Breast Cancer. He has published over 70 peer reviewed articles in the international surgical and scientific literature, mainly in the area of oncoplastic breast surgery. He has previously been Editor-in-Chief of the international Plastic Surgery Journal JPRAS Open for 6 years, demitting in 2022.
