Mr Arul Immanuel is a Consultant in General and Upper Gastrointestinal surgery and Head Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Northern Oesophago-Gastric Unit at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Mr Immanuel was appointed in Newcastle in 2011 following a two-year fellowship at the Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepato-Pancreatic and Biliary Unit at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia. He has had further training in minimally invasive cancer surgery in Japan, Hong Kong and China.
Special interests
Mr Immanuel has interests in all aspects of oesophageal and gastric surgery including cancer and complex revisional benign surgery. He continues to perform the most number of Oesophago-Gastric cancer resections in the UK with excellent outcomes.
He also set up the Robotic Oesophago-Gastric programme in Newcastle and specialises in therapeutic endoscopy including endoscopic resection for oesophageal and gastric cancer, as well as providing a specialist ERCP service.
Membership and Advisory roles
Mr Immanuel is a current advisor to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England on robotic upper gastrointestinal surgery and he has published widely and presented nationally and internationally in the field of Oesophago-Gastric surgery
He serves as an invited member of the International Society of disease of the Esophagus Database and Research Committee.
