Dr Vartan Jacques Balian is a Consultant Neuroradiologist based at the RVI’s Neurosciences Centre where he specialises in Interventional and Diagnostic Neuroradiology, including Paediatric Neuroradiology.
Dr Balian qualified from the University of Liverpool School of Medicine with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 2014 . He completed foundation training in North West, England, and undertook specialty training in radiology with higher sub-specialist and fellowship training in neuroradiology in Sheffield, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) in 2019 and obtaining Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2021.
He was appointed as Medtronic’s post-CCT fellow in interventional neuroradiology in 2021, the only industry sponsored dedicated neurointerventional fellowship in the UK at the time; and obtained the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR) in 2023.
Dr Balian was appointed as a Consultant Neuroradiologist in Newcastle in September 2023.
He has published papers and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and presented at multiple international and national conferences. He has held various leadership roles and is currently the inter-society lead for The World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies.
